Uttar Pradesh government is preparing to place a proposal before the state cabinet to set up a Metropolitan Corporation for Noida, a move that could replace the existing authority-led system of governance. The plan has been drafted by the state’s Infrastructure and Industrial Development Department awaiting final approval.
A Special Investigation Team report highlighted several concerns, including excessive concentration of decision-making powers, weak oversight systems and limited transparency in decisions. It also showed the absence of regular public disclosure on project progress and warned that Noida’s land bank is nearly exhausted, which could affect future development if administrative reforms are not introduced.
Under the proposed model, elected ward representatives would become part of the governance, allowing residents to have more direct role in civic planning and local decisions. Officials believe this could improve accountability and service. Examples of metropolitan governance in cities such as Mumbai and Bengaluru were cited as references where similar systems have strengthened public participation.
Investigators also reported discovering about 20 cases where compensation amounts were allegedly inflated by officials, involving roughly ₹118 crore. They recommended a detailed probe into assets linked to those under suspicion. If the cabinet clears the proposal, it would mark a major shift in how Noida is governed and could reshape administrative oversight in one of India’s most planned urban regions. (Realty Today)
